Shri K Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute

Monday, 2nd of November
Had my first practice this morning in the main Shala with Sharath. It was an interesting morning like I never experienced before.

When i went to register last Friday, Sharath gave me a card with my name on it and also the start time for my batch. I get to start at 6 am everyday except from Mondays and Saturdays coz we have led classes on those days. Mondays led class I have 4.30 am start and Saturdays 6 am. I am very happy with my timings, its not to late and not to early.

A girl I live with also had 4.30 am led class on Mondays so we said we go there together this morning. She told me we should be there really early so we won't have to practice next to the toilets. I was happy with company and I wouldn't  want to practice next to the toilets either, so I was keen to go with her even thou we might have to wait outside the Shala gates for a while. Unfortunate this morning it was raining. We came there at 3 am, waiting patiently outside the gates and it started to fill up with loads of people. Everyone had their umbrellas and were prepared with plastic bags to sit on. Not me. We were early so I knew we wouldn't get the worst spots in the Shala but it was a hectic feeling anyway where people were so ambitious to get good spots. Oh forgot to explain about the "Shala Time"  The time we get on our cards is not the exact time, coz the Shala time is 15-20 min before. So todays class at 4.30 am is actually about 4,10 am. We arrived at 3 by the gate, so about a hour before class would start.

After sitting by the gate for an hour finally they open and we got in. I got a good spot, happy. It started fill up fast. It came way to many people to fit in the Shala. It felt like chaos. Then Sharath raised his voice and announced that everyone who got their led class at 6 am on Saturdays should come back to next batch. My god, I had to roll up my mat again and left the room. I was so exited to just be in at last and to soon start the practice, my first time in the Shala and after that long time waiting outside the gate. Well,  I left the Shala room. Outside there was about 50 people who had been told to leave. We all just sat down outside on the stairs and heard Sharath count for the other students inside.

Regular students who comes often they know that the first week is always primary series, thats why only this week the led Monday class would be same timing as Saturdays led class. Usually it would be led second serie on Mondays after the 4.30 class but not this week. A bit confusing for a first time student there, like me.

But in the end I got in and I did my first practice "In the main shala" with Sharath and it was a really cool feeling. Got a good spot as well, yay! Sharath was in a good mood and made many jokes thru out the practice. Before we started Sharath was on a mission to catch this cockroach that was running around pretty close to my mat. When he finally caught it, he asked if anyone wanted breakfast and offered it to some of  the close by students.

We had to practice tight, the mats were mat to mat, no space in-between. Fingers and hands often touched the person next to you in down facing dog and we had to go up and down on the mats in many poses, to not be in the way for each others. I got kneed in my boob once from the guy next to me, when he was doing Maricasana A. He was a tall guy with long legs so I felt more bad for him as he had problems coz he needed much more space to do stuff.

I been spoiled before with loads of space and a teacher that can spot me if I do something wrong like breath to fast or skip a breath or cheat and take extra breath. This is all very new to me in the main Shala. Takes time to get into it. It will be good for me though. The energy is so strong, its so many ambitious people there and they got this drive. I like that in a way, but it can also be a bit intimidating, so this will teach me a lot how to handle and look at things, and see how I cope with it. I am exited for this week, can't wait for the Mysore classes.

Registered

Yesterday was a day with a lot of happening. Had class in the morning and then I rushed home to see if Alexandra arrived. Was a bit worried coz her taxi driver had call me a few times during the night and ask for her flight details. But she was as planed, in the house when I arrives back from class, unfortunate not her suitcase though. Hopefully it will arrive later today.

The day continued with a lot of focusing on how to get out money from the ATM so I could go and register at the main Shala later in the afternoon. I had to have a lot of cash to pay for my studies, and the machines don't allow you taking out as much as you want in one go. But finally I got it all out and me and Alex could continue the day with having nice breakfast and catching up on alla the things that been happening. We had a lot to talk about. Over the summer its so much happening that we never have time to just sit and talk the two of us, so we been saving a lot of talks to India. When we had something we wanted to discuss we always said, lets save it to India, and now we here. Think we did go thru almost all the topics yesterday. We been salving a lot of world problems and it will continue.

I went at 3 pm to register with Sharath. He dont really seams to like me. He started out yelling at me coz I had my flip flops on, witch everyone els had on the stairs up to his office. Thought I could just leave my shoes outside the door before I entering his office but I had to leave them all the way down at the gate. You come into his office two people at once to register and I had an Canadian guy with me thats been with him 3 times before. So he knew Sharath. Think that was a good thing coz it just made everything more relaxed and Sharath began to smile and I felt like I was not the worst person in the world to not have left my shoes by the gate. I am now registered and will have my first class in the main Shala with Sharath at 4.30 am on Monday, witch means coz of "shala time" the exakt time will be 4.10 am and I have to be there 45 min before so I don't have to practice in the toilet. But I am really exited and I bet nervous.

Its so much western people arrived here now. Its so weird. The last month its been so empty and calm and now suddenly its just boomed. But its nice in a way.

Time to get Alex out of bed and get some breakfast.

Times flies here in Mysore, I am on my 3 week here now and finally I feel my body is getting into it, into the practice. Funny why it has to take so long time, maybe coz I am getting older, nooooo noooo !  I was so thrilled after practice this morning, I made it coming down from Karandavasana. And last week I manage to jump down from Pincha to chaturanga, witch I been struggling with forever. Its good to have these days to look back at when you later have days when everything just feels impossible. I am up at 4 am every morning to drive to practice and start by 4,45 am, its so nice going back to bed after the class and sleep until 9 am. Love it. We not many people in that batch so I get a lot of attention witch is awesome. Just love being back here.

In the afternoons and the weekends its always been something happening. I feel its been a very social time for me, to get to know some new people and meet up with old once. It gives me a lot of energi but can also be a bit tiering some days. I try and balance it. This week and next week many of my old friends will arrive as well so I have a lot of catching up to do.

Right now its Dasera. Its a big Holliday for Indian people and its been going on for 9 days. Its so much people outside on the streets and all around, its crazy. I try avoid going into town coz it just mad in there. Did go a few times this week and I almost got runed over at least ten times. Its a lot of people anyway in town a normal Saturday or any week day, but now its even worse, its like as it is back home at the end of the Christmas Hollidays when everyone is buying the last christmas gifts, multiply by ten. And then people say that Mysore is a calm place comparing to the rest of india. In this chaos I get it, the importance to keep a calm mind, and a calm inside or els its not possible to live here. I don't usually get frustrated in traffic but lately I caught myself wanting to point my finger at someone who is beeping the horn for no reason, or thinking all kinds of weird words in my head about people who can't drive or think they own the roads,  but at least I didn't screen them out loud or showed my finger. But been very close.

I understand why this is the land for meditation and awareness of the inside, when everything on the outside is so chaotic. The best place to practice a calm mind, its not by a beautiful beach with an amazing surroundings, even thou it would be nice with a beach right now, ha ha ha!

ok, got to do some washing, phuu, life is so hard sometimes.... and sorry if there its a lot of wrong spelling or bad english, you might have to get use to it. I would be very happy if let know my faults though, then I try not doing wrong twice, I try at least!

Have a nice day, greetings from Mysore.
